Salutations from Dr. Grainger
First of all I would like to welcome you all to the 2015/16 school year. I know that this school year will be the best ever at Painted Hills Middle School for many reasons. First, we have a new team of highly qualified 8th grade teachers who have joined us this year. I would like to welcome Mrs. Kim Monnie (Language Arts), Mrs. Kelli Faris (Social Studies), Mr. William Sims (Social Studies), Ms. Andrea Silva (Science), Mr. James Oliger (Science), Mr. John Simonsen (Mathematics), Mr. John Conley (Mathematics), and Mrs. Tiffany Neumeyer (Mathematics) to our learning community this year. I know that their love of teaching, vast collective experience, and dedication to our students and their families will raise the bar of academic excellence at our school. Also, we welcome Dr. Pearl Vongprateep as our new assistant principal this year. Dr. V, as she is affectionately known, joins us from Morongo Unified School District having completed her doctoral degree with an emphasis on the importance of parent involvement and its impact on student academic achievement.
Second, this year we have added full time music and arts programs taught by Dr. Brian McDaniel and Mr. Lon Mercer respectively. We expanded our grade level Advancement via Individual Determination (AVID) programs as well as Project Based Learning electives for all students. By popular demand Mrs. Kari Smith is teaching dance this year, and we have added cross fit electives for all three grade levels to address the importance of physical fitness and endurance.
Now that students attending PHMS have a wide variety of rich electives and excellent highly qualified teachers, my focus this year will be on raising student achievement and closing the achievement gap. As you know last year the new state Smarter Balanced Assessment Consortium (SBAC) assessments were introduced. All students attending middle school were required to take examinations in both mathematics and language arts. These assessments are different from the previous CST examinations as students are now required to use critical thinking to solve problems and defend their reasoning rather than simply recalling facts and figures. This has required a shift in the way students are taught and my staff and I, together with support staff from the district office, are working hard to support students in acquiring these essential skills.
While increasing student achievement is very important, we cannot accomplish this task alone. This year more than ever, I will be reaching out to parents and local community partners to support us in this very important work. Dr. Vongprateep will be facilitating the creation of a Parent Teacher Association as well as different parent committees to work side by side with teachers and administration to make Painted Hills Middle School a state of the art learning institution. If you are interested in volunteering at the school, serving on School Site Council, or joining our PTA, please contact the school at 760-251-1551 or send me an email to firstname.lastname@example.org
Thank you for entrusting us with your child’s education this year. I am honored to serve as the principal for the Panther learning community, and if there is anything I can do to support your child’s success at Painted Hills, please don’t hesitate to contact me at your convenience.
